A little clarity before you begin.
You might be curious, uncertain, or wondering whether therapy is right for you. Here are answers to some common questions.
  • Do I need a specific problem to start therapy?
No. You might have a clear concern, or you might simply feel that something isn’t right. We can begin by exploring what life feels like for you and what you’d like support with.
  • What happens during the introductory call?
We’ll spend around 15 minutes talking about what you’re looking for, how I work, and practical details such as fees and availability. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions. You don’t have to make a decision during the call.
  • What is the first therapy session like?
We’ll talk about what brings you here, what you hope for, and any relevant background you feel ready to share. We’ll also go through our working agreement, including confidentiality and cancellations. There’s no test to pass and no perfect place to start.
  • Will I have to talk about my childhood?
Only where it feels relevant to our work. Earlier experiences can help us understand present patterns, but we don’t need to follow a fixed timeline or cover every part of your history.
  • What if I don’t know what to say?
You can tell me exactly that. Silence, uncertainty, and unfinished thoughts are all things we can work with. You don’t need to prepare a conversation in advance.
  • Will you give me advice?
I may offer a perspective or explore possible ways of approaching something, but I won’t tell you how to live your life. We’ll work towards a clearer understanding of what feels right for you.
  • How often will we meet?
Sessions are usually weekly and last 50 minutes. A regular time helps create continuity. We’ll discuss the arrangements before we begin.
  • How many sessions will I need?
That depends on your needs and what you want from therapy. Some people seek support around a particular issue; others prefer longer-term exploration. We’ll review our work regularly, with no requirement to book a fixed package.
  • Is online therapy right for me?
Online sessions can be convenient and offer continuity without travel. They also require somewhere private and a reliable connection. We can discuss your circumstances during the introductory call and consider whether this format is suitable.
  • Are our conversations confidential?
Confidentiality is an essential part of our work, but it has limits. These include certain legal obligations and circumstances involving serious risk of harm. I also use professional supervision to reflect on my work while protecting your identity. I’ll explain these arrangements before we begin.
  • Can I stop therapy whenever I want?
Yes. You can decide to stop at any time. Where possible, a final session gives us space to reflect on the work and discuss the ending. The usual cancellation terms still apply to booked appointments.
  • What if we’re not the right fit?
You’re welcome to say so. We can discuss what doesn’t feel right and whether a different approach or another professional might suit you better. You’re not obliged to continue.
